Song Lyrics

Song Origins

"Folks" is the story of two brothers, farm boys from the heartland--let's call them X and Y. After a prelude about their beginnings (1), we find them as young men. X has had his heart broken, and so he gives up on love and music, and takes to the road (2). Driven by nature's pure insistence, Y, to the contrary, goes looking for a mate (3). He marries (4) and discovers the flip side of undying love (5, 6). Meanwhile, out on the road and alone, X dreams of his younger days at home in the country (7), and also Great Grampa Rockthrow who disappeared in the Klondike in '98 (8), and whose very spirit seems to possess him. Years later we find them in contrast: Y has found a resigned contentment (9); X is still searching for his (10), or is he? And despite all that contentment Y can't help but notice that he's become a bit of a dorky old duffer (11), and he's not sure how it all happened (12). In the end, what can you say? (13) Whatever you do it's going to have both its upside and downside. Choose.
